Let's start a book club?
I wasn’t a big reader as a kid. As my siblings devoured novels every couple of days, I was busy dreaming about my crush and the seven children we would share when he finally realized he was in love with me. Of course, I read the classics. I had delusions of running off to Hogwarts. But I never really had a burning desire to lie awake until 2am turning pages.
When I moved to America, my excuse was always: I read too many scripts, I don’t have time for books. What a loser thing to say!!! Thank god I’ve grown into a die-hard, fully fledged bookworm. The kind of person who lives and breathes this shit. I cancel plans to read. I form relationships with characters in my head. I get annoyed with my dream of a husband because he’s not quite as perfect as my book boyfriend. What do you mean you aren’t panting with desperation every moment you’re in my presence?!
I switch back and forth between audiobooks and Kindle, unable to waste time existing in my own brain when the fate of the faerie world is at stake! Now that I’m typing this I realize I may have taken it a little too far... but I can’t see myself stopping anytime soon. Not when the entire S J. Maas universe awaits.
Since I’m committed to this new identity, I figured it was time to start a little book club. I’ll tell you my faves, you tell me yours. We can discuss ad nauseam (since Andy really doesn’t want to get into it with me and I’ve read all Reddit message boards). Here are a few to start off:
The ACOTAR series by Sarah J. Mass
I know I sound like a broken record about this but it’s just. that. good. The second book might be one of the best books I’ve ever read. If I had to rank them in order of favorites:
- A Court of Mist and Fury (book 2)
- A Court of Silver Flames (book 5)
- A Court of Thorns and Roses (book 1)
- A Court of Wings and Ruin (book 3)
- A Court of Frost and Starlight (book 4)
Read them all. I’m still thinking about them. I will say the first book took about 200 pages to really suck me in but once I was there, I was a goner.
In Scientia by Luke Baines
I would argue that this is the book that really got me into the world of Romantasy. This was my friend Luke Baines’ first foray into fiction and I was BLOWN AWAY. I knew he was an amazing script writer, but had no idea he could pull off a novel like this. I finished it in two days (no small feat for a mother of tiny ninjas) and cannot wait for the next book in the series.
I’m a Kindle girlie so this is my one and only hardcover (but she’s a beauty).
Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros
I still have 100 pages to go but you were all right. This book has me in a chokehold. I love that the action sequences start right away, and don’t even get me started on the raunchy scenes. Worth the wait. That’s secretly why we are reading, right?
It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover
Colleen Hoover is one of my favorite authors. I’m pretty sure I’ve read every single one of her books, but It Ends With Us is my favorite. Colleen has an amazing way of combining darkness with light. Honorable mentions go to: Reminders of Him and Maybe Someday.
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
I loved this beautiful book about Old Hollywood, romance, and self discovery. I think this is Taylor Jenkins Reid’s best book, but I also loved Malibu Rising (couldn’t get into Carrie Soto Is Back).
After I finish Iron Flame, I’m planning to tackle the Throne of Glass series, and then Crescent City. God I’m excited. Pray for Andy!

Hi Claire! I am a big fan of yours and I love that you started this book club! I am a die hard SJM lover and have read all three series and I’m excited for you to get into the rest of them too! The other books you have listed I loved as well but I haven’t read In Scientia or the Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. I will definitely have to check those out!
Some of my faves are:
Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus, I haven’t watched the show yet but this is so far my favorite standalone novel.Girl Abroad by Elle Kennedy, this one came out recently and I’m honestly not a romance girl (unless it’s Romantasy, of course) but I really enjoyed this one!
Memory Man by David Baldacci, this one is a crime fiction, these books I find take a while to get into but once the plot thickens I can’t stop thinking about solving the crime! This is a whole series I’m still working on
Thanks for sharing your love of reading with us! Happy Reading!

I used ACOTAR as my “get back into reading” book and I haven’t stopped. Throne of Glass was such an incredible journey and I love the modernity of Crescent City. Fourth Wing & Iron Flame have me in a chokehold as well, it’s killing me to wait for Onyx Storm!
My recs would be Book of Azrael by Amber V. Nicole, Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent & When the Moon Hatched by Sarah A. Parker. They’re all book 1 in unfinished series.

When I tell you ACOTAR changed my life. Hadn’t read in years and then I read it…. And immediately reread it. I’ll never stop preaching about our high lord and savior Rhysand 😭 it’s just too perfect. Nothing has compared since then but the Kingdom of Crows series was also pretty great

EEEEEEPPP I’m so excited for your Throne of Glass journey. I’m about 20 pages away from finishing Crescent City 3 and SJM has changed my world lmao so dramatic but it’s true. I too used the excuse of “I’m in nursing school, I read to much s*** daily, I can’t read for fun” LMAO glad we shook that nonsense! Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on TOG

Loved Fourth Wing and Iron Flame. Also a huge fan of ACOTAR.
Unpopular opinion, I do not like Coleen Hoover. The subject matter is just too much for me to find joy or entertainment in.
I’m currently reading “The Wife Upstairs.” I’m loving it.
And one of my favorite books I’ve read in the last several years has been DARK MATTER by Blake Crouch.

I’m so excited for you to read the Throne of Glass series! I recently finished Queen of Shadows and genuinely is the best book I’ve ever read in my life. I’m going to start the tandem read soon and I can’t wait to hear all of your thoughts on the series!!! Keep us updated :)

I still think about ACOTAR and Fourth Wing everyday. They are my whole personality right now. I just finished Powerless by Lauren Roberts and let me tell you, it had me from the first page just like fourth wing did. I would have finished it in one day if I didn’t have to take care of littles in reality.

I’m glad I found this, I wanted to start a book club but could not find anyone who wanted to deeply talk about books at great length. I read a lot as a kid but as I got older, had more responsibilities, I lost the motivation to pick up a book. I’m just now finding my way back. I enjoy spending my weekends in book stores or the library as I did when I was younger. If you would have told me ten years ago that I would enjoy getting up early, working out, and then heading to the library I would have called you insane :) I am guilty of buying books that I have never read however I believe that there is a future version of me that will do us proud and will read the orphaned books.
You have an amazing list and I look forward to reading some/all. I have been looking to find a good series that wants to keep me up all night. Haven’t read a good series in a long time. I enjoy a good “whodunnit” one of the best I ever read was Mary Mary by James Patterson, IMHO, he has not written a masterpiece since 🫣. I also enjoy fantasy (reality and I don’t see eye to eye), SciFi, horror, thrillers, do cookbooks count?
I just started getting into Jack Reacher books by Lee Child. Honestly I did not expect to like them. I just finished a book I was super excited about Nestlings by Nat Cassidy but ended up being kinda blah. The only book (it seemed) that was available to download from the library was a Jack Reacher book (thank you suggestions) I now have several audios on hold from the series.
The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides was an amazing read. It steered you one way all while something else was going on.
Vera Wong’s unsolicited advice for Murders by Jesse Q. Sutanto this book was a cozy read and kinda silly. I was a little surprised by the end because I thought for sure it was the….
Thank you. This is amazing. I’m also looking for new reads.
Have a Happy Day ☀️ -

I tried Throne of Glass and it wasn’t for me. Definitely had potential just fell flat. Interested to hear if you like Crescent city. If I had to recommend a book to read it would be The Perfect Marriage alittle thriller with a shocking ending. Happy reading!
